JA Co-operatives — Where the Profit Is
Pre-Tax Profit by Business
The multi-purpose co-operatives run five businesses and publish an income statement for each. Banking and mutual insurance earn; farm marketing and supply, living services and farm guidance do not. The second view is the same figures after the farm-guidance loss has been charged back across the segments — the ministry's own allocation, published as a line of the statement, not a calculation made here.
The Farm-Guidance Charge
Farm guidance — the advisers who work with member farmers — runs at a loss every year, and the whole of that loss is allocated to the segments that earn. This is the cross-subsidy written down by the ministry: what each business bore, by fiscal year, on a zero baseline. A bar above zero is a cost carried, not a profit.
Income Statement
Every published line of one business's income statement, on the newest fiscal year and the one before it. Amounts are thousands of yen as released; the change and the share of group revenue are calculated from them. A line the ministry does not publish for this business shows —, never a zero.
