Visitor Arrivals to Japan
Arrivals by Month
Monthly arrivals exactly as published by JNTO, for the national total or any markets you pick. Arrivals are strongly seasonal, so the second view indexes each month against the same month of 2019 — the last full year before the border closed — and the third lays the years over each other by calendar month. The two most recent months are estimates.
Contributions to Arrivals Growth
The year-over-year change in total arrivals, split into the markets that produced it. Each bar segment is that market's contribution in percentage points; the segments sum to the total line, which is the headline growth rate. Markets outside the five named are bundled into one disclosed residual, never dropped.
Market Composition
The same arrivals, read as a mix rather than a level. Shares are taken over a trailing twelve months, so a market's summer peak does not read as a change in the mix. Concentration is the Herfindahl–Hirschman index of those shares: higher means the visitors come from fewer places, which is the exposure a single market's policy or economy can move.
Arrivals and Accommodation Prices
Arrivals are a count of people and the consumer price index for hotel charges is an index, so neither can be read off the other's axis. Both are therefore shown on one comparable basis: each indexed to the same month of 2019. The two series come from different agencies and are published on different schedules.
Market Detail
Every market JNTO publishes, all on the latest month with a complete breakdown, so that every row and every share is the same month. Arrivals are official counts; growth, share and the 2019 comparison are calculated from them. Regional totals and their member markets are both listed — a region is the sum of its members, so the two must not be added together.
